Whilst many Nu Metal bands sold out so to speak, either fading away through a lack of creative thinking or the power to change or simply whole-heartedly denounced the genre claiming that they were ‘never really Nu Metal’, which was always going to be utter rubbish, Deftones have never made any bold, stupid claims and have never stopped being creative and pushing the boundaries of the genre and extending themselves reasonably further. However, the band are currently working on a new eighth album and have stated Eros would likely be released earliest after this, but that it may be later. Vocalist Chino Moreno announced that the band are now more likely to release the shelved Eros album, the final Deftones release to feature Chi. On Apbassist Chi Cheng would die from the injuries sustained from his car accident 5 years previously. It received critical acclaim and the band won Album of the Year from the Revolver Golden God awards in 2013. The band’s latest release Koi No Yokan was released in November 2012. The album would debut at number 6 on the Billboard 200 and chart well around the world. The band would shelf the album and instead would release Diamond Eyes with Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega.
However whilst recording the band’s sixth album Eros, bassist chi Cheng would be involved in a car accident and would enter into a coma. But Saturday Night Wrist did finally get released to all around critical praise and toured the album worldwide, playing many festivals. The band’s fifth album was delayed until 2006. Critics received the album well however and the band continued to press boundaries of combining rock and hip hop in an era when it was slowly starting to fade. The band won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance for the track Elite.Ĭompared to the band’s Grammy award winning success of White Pony, 2003 bought the band’s self titled album which was essentially unsuccessful from a commercial standpoint. White Pony was released initially in 2000 and was certified platinum in 2002. It has recently also been certified platinum. The bands next album Around the Fur, released in 1997 would bring the band even bigger success. This album would end up being certified gold in 1999 and platinum in 2008. But it wasn’t until 1994 that the band’s debut album Adrenaline would be released. They formed initially when they were still in school at the tender age of 15, way back in 1988. Deftones have had a career that’s lasted over 2 decades.
